Dr. Jonathan SPEELMAN
HK registered & American recognized Specialist in Small Animal Surgery
Dr. Jonathan Speelman graduated in Veterinary Studies from Murdoch University in Western Australia in 1988, and has worked in Australia and the United Kingdom. Dr. Speelman arrived in Hong Kong in 2000 from Melbourne, Australia and has worked continously at Peace Avenue Veterinary Clinic since then. He passed postgraduate membership examinations in Small Animal Surgery through the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists just before arriving in 1998. Dr. Speelman has gained extensive experience through his time at PAVC, including referrals from veterinary practitioners throughout Hong Kong. During his time here, the clinic has grown and developed from a 5-vet day-time practice, to a 24-hour 30+ vet practice with advanced imaging equipment, including MRI, CT, intraoperative fluoroscopy and digital radiography.
In 2011, Dr. Speelman commenced a 3-year surgery residency training program within the PAVC hospital environment, under an ACVS Diplomate. This training was an intensive training programme involving exposure to all aspects of specialist surgical practice. Externships were completed at various specialist referral surgical practices in Australia and at University teaching hospitals in the U.S.A., including U.C.Davis. The residency also involved independent research and publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals. He is an active journal reviewer for publications relating to research in surgery.
In February 2016, Dr. Speelman took his certification examinations by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, and passed on his first attempt. He is now a board certified Specialist surgeon.
Dr. Speelman receives referrals for orthopaedic, oncology, soft tissue and neurosurgery cases, from within the practice and from veterinarians throughout Hong Kong. He regularly attends international conferences and continuing education events, and keeps in close contact with overseas specialists, to keep up to date with the best and most current practice for management of his patient's problems.
Dr. Speelman lives in the New Territories with his family of two children, a local dog and cat. Dr. Speelman is a keen cyclist, and regularly rides the trails and roads of Hong Kong to keep fit. Dr. Speelman has travelled extensively throughout the world, and found living and working in busy Hong Kong a stimulating way of life, with close access to the vibrant surrounding areas of Southeast Asia. Dr. Speelman also enjoys playing and listening to music, including piano and didgeridoo, and the challenge of learning to understand and speak Cantonese.
Since the takeover of the hospital by CityU, Dr. Speelman has taken on the role of Chief Veterinary Medical Officer. This means he is responsible for coordinating the veterinary team with a view to providing the best possible veterinary care for the patients of this hospital.
